Fees are the norm now for almost any kind of transaction, including some pay-by-check whether it's web-based, phone touch tones, or human customer service rep. Part of this is the industry trying to squeeze more money out of you. Part of this is the new trend to outsource everything. One way to offset outsourcing costs is to charge offsetting fee per transaction.
Dude. Recently had the same experience with Ticketmaster after not having bought tickets online for a long time. I, too, was SHOCKED at all the fees, I share your pain.
I sucked it up for that purchase thinking that the show would sell out (it didn't), I needed to buy right way (I didn't have to...).
My advice is to check the venue for alternatives to buying tickets through ticketmaster. In my case, the club had an option to purchase tickets via fax and save a TON on fees (not all fees, there is still a $2 fee per ticket, but MUCH less than TM), then pickup tickets at the box office night of show. Not as "convenient" as purchasing online, but much cheaper.
In my research about online ticketing, I've learned that INSANE service charges don't actually prevent people from buying the ticket...it just makes them disgruntal.
If there is going to be a revolution, consumers and bands need to stand their ground. Pearl Jam tried in the 90s, but eventually gave up and continued to get raped by the man.

it goes for insurance too
I just realized that I have been paying *extra* for the privilege of having my car insurance deducted from my paycheck electronically.
This is happening everywhere

oooo.... Good one Jon Stahl. How widely used are these folks?
But did you take it?
My question is: Did you still buy the ticket?
